#DiscussAI collaborates on three exciting events with the SignON project
We have some exciting events coming up in November 2022 as part of an ongoing collaboration with the SignON project. These include an innovative Artificial Intelligence and Irish Sign Language performance of Shakespeare, and two Think-Ins about technology that will be able to automatically translate between sign languages and spoken languages (a bit like Google Translate).
We invite people to get involved in these events to explore how this technology should be developed, and how can we make sure it is guided by Deaf and hard of hearing communities?
12 November 2022, 10.30 - 13.00 An app to translate sign languages to spoken? How would that work?
Deaf Village Ireland, Ratoath Road, Cabra, Dublin 7
In this workshop, we will be considering technology that can automatically translate between sign languages and spoken languages. How should this technology be developed, and how can we make sure it is guided and led by Deaf and hard of hearing communities?
Share your opinions on this type of technology, and your thoughts on the situations you might see it being used and of benefit.
Lunch and coffee included.

25 November 2022, 10.00 - 12.00 An app to translate sign languages to spoken? How would that work?
Online, via Zoom
Can you imagine a time when an app on your phone will be able to automatically translate between sign languages and spoken languages (a bit like Google Translate)? As automatic machine translation technology improves, an app like this might not be too far off in the future. At this Think-In, you will share your opinions on this type of technology, and your thoughts on the situations you might see it being used and of benefit.
This event will build on the outcomes from the discussion event on 12 November.

16 November 2022, 18.00 - 19.30 All The World’s A Screen: A Shakespeare performance in Irish Sign Language for people and machines
As part of Science Week 2022, SignON will be presenting an art-science theatre performance that explores our relationship with artificial intelligence. In collaboration with Deaf theatre makers in Ireland, we are developing a Shakespeare production in Irish Sign Language (ISL) that incorporates machine vision and machine translation.
The show will be followed by an audience discussion on our hopes, ideas, and concerns for these new technologies. The project is supported by Science Foundation Ireland and based on a format developed by TRACES as part of SISCODE.
