#DiscussAI Think-In Maynooth: ‘Big Brother is watching you…So what?’

Smile, you’re on camera! From taking the bus, to police surveillance and everything in between, we are now being monitored in a way we never have been before. 

 Join this #DiscussAI Think-In for a lively discussion on the increasing use of public surveillance through Artificial Intelligence and its impact on our day-to-day lives.  

 Through fascinating discussion scenarios, we will explore and deliberate on the potential benefits and drawbacks of AI surveillance for individuals and society at large.

 #DiscussAI Think-Ins are a forum for everyone – citizens, researchers, and industry professionals– to openly discuss the potential future we face as AI technologies evolve. These discussions allow a space to explore together if there is a safe and ethical way for us all to benefit from AI technology.

The event is open to all adults. Note that you don’t need any prior knowledge of AI to participate.

#DiscussAI Think-In: An app to translate sign languages to spoken? How would that work?

Can you imagine a time when an app on your phone will be able to automatically translate between signed and spoken languages (a bit like Google Translate)? As automatic machine translation technology improves, an app like this might not be too far off in the future.

SignON is a community-driven project that is developing technology that will mean Deaf, hard of hearing and hearing individuals can translate between signed and spoken languages using translation technology like Google translate.

But how should this technology be developed, and how can we make sure it is guided by Deaf and hard of hearing communities?

At this Think-In workshop, we will ask for your opinions on this type of technology, and your thoughts on the situations you might see it being used and of benefit.

This event is for Deaf, hard of hearing and hearing people. We welcome participants who use sign language regularly, a little, or not at all. Irish Sign Language interpreting, International Sign interpreting, and live captioning in English will be in place for the event.

Electric Picnic

We’re putting on our wellies and dusting off our tents as we are heading to Electric Picnic on 2-4 September!

Join us each day from 12-6 at the HUMAN LAB: Art & Science stage in the Mindfield area for the weekend where you can:

  • get crafty with our DALL-E vs Dalí and make a poster to tell us your surreal AI concerns!
  • immerse yourself in a virtual reality music video
  • learn about how your phone is designed to grab your attention
  • talk to ADAPT researchers about the state of AI and where things are going

Then on Sunday at 1pm, join the Think-Ins team for an interactive workshop to consider the impact AI can have on you, your life, your work and your community.

Citizens' Think-Ins: Knowledge-Sharing Forum Save The Date: 7 Sept @ 10.30

ADAPT’s citizens’ think-ins foster dialogue and discussion among researchers and citizens on the societal implications of emerging Artificial Intelligence innovations.

ADAPT invites you to a virtual knowledge-sharing forum about the outcomes and insights generated by the 2021/2022 citizens’ think-in series.

You’ll hear from participating researchers and our community and evaluation partners.

We’ll share tips for hosting your own think-in in order to stimulate citizen-researcher conversations on STEM research and innovation.

You’ll also find out how you can participate in our new think-in series launching in late September 2022.

 To celebrate European Researchers Night, this Think-In will run simultaneously in Malta through our partners: the University of Malta and Science in the City. We’ll therefore get to compare and contrast attitudes to this topic in Ireland and Malta.
